Street Kids Rehabilitation and Community Work

Project Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Project Age Limit: Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health
Project Highlights
This programme involves various aspects of community work and development. We support a number of different community development initiatives, which are outlined below. Our aim is to provide you with a diverse and varied experience, which will allow you insights into various facets of life of underprivileged individuals in Cape Town. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the following programmes:
- Lawrence House
- Lawrence House is an Orphanage to 24 Refugee children ranging from 6-19 years of age. Most of the refugee children come from Central Africa (The Congo, Angola and Zimbabwe) so speak either French or Portuguese as their first language. However, their English is extremely good. All of the children live on the premises on a full-time basis and attend school during the week. You will report to Alessandra or Father Mario.
- St Anne’s Shelter for Women
- Established in 1904 by the Anglican Church, St Anne’s Homes celebrates more than 100 years of honouring the sacred bond between mother and child; as well as providing a place of hope and healing for these vulnerable single parent families who would otherwise be separated through poverty and unemployment.
- One Love – Street Children’s project
- One Love Street Children’s Project is a registered non-profit organisation, which was formed to address the needs to street children and homeless adults living in the Cape Town city centre. One Love began as a feeding project but has evolved to assisting not only street children but the greater street community in a number of ways.
- Project Childhood – Street Kids Rehabilitation Programme facilitated by the South African Police (SAP)
- Your involvement with Project Childhood will be approximately 2 mornings a week and will also be at your personal preference. This programme requires a lot of initiative and preparation from volunteers as it has little structure of its own. We have a resource library of ideas and information that volunteers will have at their disposal to prepare for their time with the SAP kids if they wish. The project is based in Woodstock.
