Livingstone - Teaching

‘Mosi-oa-tunya’ - The Smoke That Thunders… this is how the locals refer to the magnificent spray that is elevated above the Victoria Falls. Against this backdrop we find the town of Livingstone, Zambia’s tourist mecca and the “adventure capital of Africa”. Your placement begins with our 4-day orientation programme (included in your fee) and then the opportunity to immerse yourselves in the local community to make a positive impact on this corner of Zambia.
Typical schools in Livingstone work on a system known as ‘hot-seating’. Having too many children to accommodate, they run two or even three school sessions per day. Volunteers work as teaching assistants in the classroom, or with sports coaching programmes which keep children off the streets. You will find that most of the schools have meagre and ill-equipped facilities, but a wealth of children with a desire to learn.
LISCA (Livingstone Street Kids Community Association) is a place that will warm your heart. The orphanage gives shelter for approximately 120 disadvantaged community children and provides them with a basic education. Volunteers have the chance to make a real impact on the lives of these children and to assist with their learning experience. There is also a hall adjacent to the orphanage and volunteers work with the children to organise drama productions and other extra mural activities – a valuable outlet for their creativity.
Not all of the children you will work with here are orphans, as the LISCA centre houses only 20 orphans, but is also a community centre for dozens of disadvantaged children that you will also have the chance to interact with.
