Livingston - Medical - Itinerary

Here is how a typical day in the life of a Livingstone medical volunteer might take shape. Please note that your itineraries may differ from this, depending on your own experience and the number of other volunteers on the placement at the same time, and this is simply to give an example:

  • 6:30am Get up and start getting ready for your project
  • 7:00 Head off on the short drive to your project after the help-yourself breakfast of cereals, toast, tea and coffee
  • Morning Session The presence of helping hands at the clinic is always appreciated by their dedicated staff. Your assistance allows staff to focus their time on more complicated matters. You might spend the morning in the outpatient department, the busiest part of the clinic, recording patients’ vital signs in preparation for their consultation. Your time may also be spent in the ‘Under-5’s department’ assisting with baby weighing or with the planning of logistics for upcoming vaccinations programmes.
  • Lunch Break You have the opportunity to take some time out, as they are collected and taken back to the volunteer house for lunch.
  • Afternoon Session Most afternoons are spent at the LISCA orphanage, where the volunteers play sports and recreational / learning games with the children (the local orphanage also doubles as a community centre).
  • Approx 4:30pm - Home Time You will be collected by your coordinator/driver and taken back to the volunteer house, or into Livingstone town if you wish. Here you will be able to check your emails, watch TV, socialise or just explore the town and some of the local markets
  • Evenings are very sociable affairs. Generally, volunteers discuss their days amongst each other whilst taking supper together, prepare for your project the next day, or even venture out on a cruise on the nearby Zambezi River or having sundowners at one of the many resorts located on the banks of flowing waters that make up Africa’s 5th largest waterway
