Hwange National Park

Our Miombo Lodge is the base for this stimulating, exciting and rewarding programme. Our recent invitation from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to join them in their conservation efforts allows African Impact volunteers to work inside the Hwange National Park.
Located at Miombo Safari Lodge, on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, and near the rural village of Dete, two hours drive from the magnificent Victoria Falls – Africa’s adrenalin capital.
African Impact is the only volunteer organisation to have special permission to be involved with directly assisting The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management (DNPWM) in their conservation efforts within Hwange National Park. Together with our consultant PhD ecologists, we have developed an exciting programme where snare sweeps, game counts, visual observations and the darting of snared animals and the subsequent removal of these snares are all important aspects of wildlife conservation. Imagine the thrill of being able to work off road and perhaps even at night, in the presence of Hwange's Big 5!
- Project Highlights:
- Small carnivore research (Conducting a small carnivore inventory; spoor transects; etc)
- Participation in our studies monitoring Elephant populations and their damage to vegetation
- Wildlife population counts and snare checks on wildlife
- Spoor transects and Boundary patrols, which involves the assessment of what game has been in the area, and assisting trackers in searching for signs of any illegal activity from possible poachers.
- Assisting our game scouts in the darting of snared animals and the removal of snares
- A deeper understanding of large-scale wildlife management and in-depth exploration of Zimbabwe’s most famous National Park.
